HealthWatch: Breakfast Foods Still Contaminated By Weed Killer; Outdoor Learning Benefits

WELCOME BACK. ACCORDING TO A NEW STUDY, COMMISSIONED BY THE ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP SEVERAL BOAT-BASED BREAKFAST CEREALS AND SNACKS TESTED POSITIVE FOR TRACE AMOUNTS OF A CHEMICAL FOUND IN WEEDKILLER. DR. MALLIKA MARSHALL IS HERE AND MANY OF THESE PRODUCTS ARE POPULAR WITH CHILDREN? INCLUDING CHEERIOS AND ALL OF OUR KIDS EAT CHEERIOS. SO THE CONCERN REALLY IS FOR KIDS BECAUSE THEY ARE MUCH MORE VULNERABLE TO THE EFFECTS OF CHEMICALS AND IN THIS CASE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A CHEMICAL CALLED GLYPHOSATE, IT'S IN A WEED KILLER CALLED ROUND UP AND THE W.H.O. HAS CLASSIFIED IT AS A PROBABLE CARCINOGENIC IN HUMANS MEANING IT PROBABLY CAUSES CANCER. THE WORKING GROUP SAID THAT ALL BUT FOUR OF 21 PRODUCTS THEY TESTED HAD LEVELS HIGHER THAN WHAT THEY WOULD CONSIDER SAFE FOR KIDS WHICH DIFFERS AMONG SCIENTISTS. BUT IN OCTOBER THEY FOUND THAT SAME GROUP, CONCERNING LEVELS IN SOME QUAKER OATS PRODUCTS AS WELL. GENERAL MILLS AND QUAKER BOTH SAY THEIR PRODUCTS ARE SAFE. I JUST WANT PARENTS OUT THERE NOT TO BE ALARMED BECAUSE AGAIN LOTS OF KIDS EAT AT THESE PRODUCTS. BUT IF YOU WANT TO TRY TO MINIMIZE EXPOSURE, YOU CAN TRY TO BUY ORGANIC FOOD, ALTHOUGH THOSE MIGHT CONTAIN TRACES AS WELL. OR LOOK FOR PRODUCTS THAT SPECIFICALLY SAY THEY DO NOT BUY FROM FARMERS THAT USE THIS WEEDKILLER. I WAS GOING TO SAY PEOPLE SHOULDN'T BE TOO ALARMED, AND THEN I THOUGHT MAYBE PEOPLE SHOULD BE ALARMED. BASED ON — YOU ARE PRETTY SPECIAL. SO MAYBE GO WITH ORGANIC IF YOU CAN. BUT TRY TO READ THE LABELS AND DO SOME RESEARCH. EXACTLY. THERE'S THIS NEW STUDY THAT FINDS THAT LEARNING IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS FOR AS LITTLE AS AN HOUR A WEEK CAN DO WONDERS FOR CHILDREN AND TEACHERS. THIS ISN'T SURPRISING THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO SHOW IT MIGHT BE BENEFICIAL. RESEARCHERS INTERVIEWED TEACHERS AND PUT NINE AND 11- YEAR-OLDS IN FOCUS GROUPS AT THREE PRIMARY SCHOOLS WHERE THEY DO TEACH SOME CLASSES AT LEAST FOR AN HOUR A WEEK IN NATURE. THE KIDS SAID WHEN THEY WERE LEARNING OUTDOORS, THAT THEY FELT THEY HAD MORE FREEDOM, THEY WERE ABLE TO BETTER EXPRESS THEMSELVES, THEY LOVED BEING ABLE TO RUN AROUND OUTSIDE. THE TEACHERS SAID THE KIDS WERE ACTUALLY MORE ENGAGED AND THEY THEMSELVES HAD BETTER JOB SATISFACTION AND FEELINGS OF WELL-BEING. THEY ARE SAYING THIS MIGHT BE AN EASY WAY FOR SCHOOLS TO SORT OF INCORPORATE SOME OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES. WHICH WILL BENEFIT BOTH TEACHERS — I LOVE THIS. BEING OUTDOORS IN GENERAL FEELS HEALTHIER AND YOU GET VITAMIN
